Congo DR, Kasai Central, Luemba, 16 March 2018

A field outside of Luemba that has been slashed and burnt. Despite the conflicts and the destruction of many fields in 2016 and 2017, people who have returned to their homes started planting again and although malnutrition is still a problem, people are finding solutions to find food. KILL ME INSTEAD! Fadia, 19, traces cracks in the walls of her rented apartment as she describes the death of her father. After returning home from his job as a construction laborer, shortly before the dawn prayer, he collapsed right away onto his bed, dusting the sheets with the debris that fell from his work clothes. Not long after, the shabiha (pro-regime militia) burst into their home and shot him, execution style, in the head. He had barely woken up. When Fadia?s little brother wailed in fear, the guns were turned on him. Fadia screamed, ?Kill me instead!? Both were spared. She now lives with her aunt on the outskirts of Amman in a crowded one-bedroom apartment with fifteen extended family members. They survive by digging through trash containers and finding remnants of bread to dry and sell to herders. This earns them a couple of dollars a day.

During each of the 4-day trainings the 15 participants will work together with 3 NOOR photographers as tutors, to share experiences, work on portfolios, improve editing skills and learn how to create more impactful visual stories. Reactions from previous NOOR-Nikon educational programs:

“Photography is part education and part evolution of one’s talent. This was my first workshop and it was an enriching experience. I learned more in these days than probably I could have learned in a year working in the field.”   – Bogdan Chesaru, Romania (NOOR-Nikon Masterclass, Bucharest, Romania)

“The workshop was fantastic! Meeting with NOOR photographers and very talented people from our region is a great opportunity. You should continue organizing programs for regional cooperation among young photographers. I got great tips about storytelling, editing, grants and bookmaking!”  – Ozge Sebzeci, Turkey (NOOR-Nikon Masterclass, Istanbul, Turkey)

“The masterclass helped to draw an overall picture of my career. The experiences shared by NOOR helps to make a long-term plan.”  – Elyor Nematov, Kyrgyzstan (NOOR-Nikon Masterclass, Almaty, Kazakhstan)
