The role of reporting and images in revolutionary movements in the Arab region.
The developments that spread throughout the Arab world in recent months have undoubtedly received a strong impetus from the availability of social media in the region. Blogs, Twitter, Facebook and powerful online images and video eased spread of the revolutionary enthusiasm across borders. They have eased the transmission of notions such as human rights and media freedom into the Arab public sphere.
Investing in the Future, Contemporary Image Collective and NOOR organized a working conference in Cairo, Egypt from 14 to 19 May. The aim is to assess the role of photojournalism and digital journalism in the current and future political upheavals by exchanging experiences and knowledge and to establish interrelations between the two professions. Moreover, Framing the Future aims to give participants the tools to profile themselves and their work in a safe manner in the changing reality and to answer more adequately to the needs for reliable information. Subjects include personal & digital security, the role of new media, the legal framework and the importance of visuals in reporting in revolutionary situations.
Participants come from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen. All are professional journalists in the digital age. The project includes two parallel four-day workshops for 15 photojournalists and 15 digital journalists and a two-day concluding conference where both groups join together with digital media activists, journalists and other experts.
NOOR photographes Alixandra Fazzina, Nina Berman and Stanley Greene will provide training and share their expertise with the group of 15 photojournalists. NOOR’s managing director Claudia Hinterseer moderates the photojournalism workshop. Egyptian cyber activist Bassam Samir moderates the digital journalism workshop.
