Right after the protests started in the Arab world, Yuri went to Cairo's Tahrir Square in Egypt, where the population was gathering to claim more freedom and justice in their country. He covered the situations in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen successively, and since then, returned to Cairo twice, always on assignment for TIME Magazine.


iraq 2002-2007


Yuri Kozyrev has been working in Iraq to document the struggle for stability in Iraq since the US led invasion in March 2003. While Saddam Hussein’s regime was quickly removed, many major obstacles still remained and securing peace proved to be a difficult task. In December 2006, President Bush announced a plan to increase troops, and by October the surge appeared to produce results. However with militias and widespread corruption, the future of the country looks uncertain.


afghanistan 2001-2006


The "Lost Years".
In October 2001, the USA and Britain launched air strikes on Afghanistan after the Taliban had again refused to hand over Osama bin Laden, now held responsible for the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York. On the ground the allies lent support to the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, a multi-ethnic opposition group.

The Second Chechen War was the key to Vladimir Putin's victory in the 2000 presidential campaign. The destruction of the Chechen separatist government cemented his image as a tough, decisive leader, in contrast to the bumbling ailing Boris Yeltsin, eased out to make way for him..
