NOOR invites photographers to apply to join the NOOR Photo Agency and NOOR Foundation by Friday 5 August.
NOOR, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is committed to producing independent, in-depth visual reports on the most critical issues of the day. Its members are some of the most highly recognized and experienced documentary photographers working in the world today. Visit www.noorimages.com for more information.

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to identify and produce stories at the highest standards of journalistic and ethical integrity. NOOR is looking for photographers with a distinct signature and visual excellence, who share the ideals and mission of NOOR: to contribute to a growing understanding of the world.
The NOOR Foundation is an international non-profit organization creating and distributing compelling photojournalistic works with the aim to raise awareness and to contribute to the visual history of mankind. The foundation’s mission is to provide the stimulus to undertake documentary photography and educational projects.
NOOR members are Nina Berman, Philip Blenkinsop, Pep Bonet, Alixandra Fazzina, Jan Grarup, Stanley Greene, Yuri Kozyrev, Kadir van Lohuizen, Jon Lowenstein, Francesco Zizola and Claudia Hinterseer (managing director)
NOOR’s members own NOOR. New members will spend one year with NOOR before full membership is offered. All members are obliged to purchase shares, attend annual meetings and contribute dynamically and responsibly to the NOOR Foundation and to the business of the agency to collectively and actively promote and sell.
Portfolio submission:
- Photographers should motivate in English their desire to join NOOR;
- Photographers should send NOOR a selection, no more than 50 images of their work (max. 1024 pixels wide with embedded captions and story introductions), including several feature stories via the NOOR FTP (the address for submissions is available upon request via office@noorimages.com)
Submissions should be received no later than Friday 5 August 2011. The members of NOOR will consider new candidates during the annual meeting in Amsterdam, at the end of August 2011.

kadir van lohuizen launches ipad app

On 16 March 2011 Kadir van Lohuizen (NOOR) began his road trip in Puerto Toro in southern Chile. Over 40 weeks he will be traveling by road along the west coast of the Americas towards Northern Alaska. Following the Pan-American Highway, Van Lohuizen is looking for stories of the people migrating between and within the countries along the route.

The photo stories produced on the road are exclusive to the application. On a weekly basis, reports containing 15-30 images and video impressions are added to the content. Currently the app contains eight reports made in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. In the 30 weeks to follow, stories from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Central- and Northern America will be added.

Developed especially for the iPad, and combining blogs, photo series, video and background information about the countries covered, the Via PanAm application leads the viewer day by day past the many places, people and stories Van Lohuizen meets along the 28,000 km route. The app can be downloaded from the App Store for USD 3,99/EUR 2,99.

cairo workshop: framing the future

The role of reporting and images in revolutionary movements in the Arab region

Investing in the Future, Contemporary Image Collective and NOOR organize a working conference in Cairo, Egypt from 14 to 19 May. The aim is to assess the role of photojournalism and digital journalism in the current and future political upheavals by exchanging experiences and knowledge and to establish interrelations between the two professions.

Participants come from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraqi Kurdistan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen. All are professional journalists in the digital age. The project includes two parallel four-day workshops for 15 photojournalists and 15 digital journalists and a two-day concluding conference where both groups join together with digital media activists, journalists and other experts.

NOOR photographers Alixandra Fazzina, Nina Berman and Stanley Greene will provide training and share their expertise with the group of 15 photojournalists. NOORʼs managing director Claudia Hinterseer moderates the photojournalism workshop. Egyptian cyber activist Bassam Samir moderates the digital journalism workshop.

2011 noor-nikon masterclass in documentary photography

From 21 to 25 March 2011, the annual NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography will take place in Bucharest, Romania, organized again with the generous support of Nikon Europe BV. This yearʼs program will take place in collaboration with the Eidos Foundation and Skin Media SRL (www.skin.ro).

Fifteen participants hailing from seven surrounding countries have been selected from over 100 applicants to take part in the NOOR-Nikon masterclass and tutored by three NOOR member photographers: Philip Blenkinsop, Pep Bonet and Stanley Greene.

alixandra fazzina joins noor

NOOR is delighted that Alixandra Fazzina joins the NOOR Foundation and NOOR photo agency per today.

Alixandra’s photography focuses on under-reported conflicts and the often forgotten humanitarian consequences of war. Studying Fine Art, she began her career as a war artist in Bosnia. Since then, she has worked independently as a photojournalist throughout Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Alixandra is the author of “A Million Shillings - Escape From Somalia” (Trolley, 2010), which follows the often deadly journey on people smuggling routes from the Horn of Africa. Alixandra is based in Pakistan and currently working there.

2010 noor-nikon masterclass in documentary photography

Next Monday, on the 22nd of March, the annual Noor-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography starts. Noor and Nikon Europe BV support documentary photographers from emerging markets all of over the world through the organization of motivational masterclasses. This year’s program will take place at the Foundation of Informational and Cultural Projects FotoDepartament in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, from 22-26 March 2010.

Fifteen participants hailing from seven countries from the CIS (former USSR countries) and Baltic States have been selected from over 250 applicants to take part in the masterclass.

During the five day workshop, the fifteen participants, together with three member photographers of NOOR - Nina Berman (USA), Jan Grarup (Denmark) and Yuri Kozyrev (Russia) - will share experiences, work on their portfolios, improve their editing skills and discuss how to pick up documentary stories. In preparation to the workshop, the participants have prepared a feature on the humanitarian effects of climate change in their home regions.

nina berman joins noor

NOOR is delighted to announce that Nina Berman joined the agency as of 1 July 2009. Nina Berman (1960) is an American documentary photographer with a primary interest in the United States’ political and social landscape. Her work has been widely recognized with awards in art and journalism and has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries in both the United States and Europe.

Nina is the author of two monographs: Purple Hearts – Back from Iraq (Trolley, 2004) and Homeland (Trolley, 2008). Nina frequently lectures on photography, conducts workshops and is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in her hometown of New York City.

2008 visa pour l'image

On September 7th at the annual Visa pour l’Image Festival in Perpignan, NOOR photographer Philip Blenkinsop was awarded the Visa d’Or “News” award, for his reportage on the aftermath of the recent earthquake in China. It is the third time that Blenkinsop has received this prestigious award.

Jon Lowenstein will become a member of Noor as of the first of May. Jon specializes in long-term, in-depth documentary photographic projects. We are truly happy that Jon joins our group. You can view his photographic projects on his personal website and his Shadow Lives USA project by clicking here. Early May his work will be integrated on the Noor website and in the online archive.

Founding member Jodi Bieber has decided to leave her agency by May the first. Noor is sorry to see Jodi leave at this early stage but respects her choice and wishes her all the best with her work in the future.

Noor officially launched during the this year's Visa Pour l’Image festival in the South of France. Noor is a collective of nine independent documentary photographers, pooling their strengths and committed to working independently to make impact on world views and opinions through photography.
