Executions took place throughout the late 1970's and 1980's and in the weeks after the Gulf War in 1991, when American troops were still occupying much of southern Iraq. Saddam's government killed in purges aimed at specific political opposition groups, the Shiite majority, Communists, relatives of dissidents, Muslim clerics, Christians and Kurds.

Iraqi Kurdistan is in northern Iraq. The Kurds have been persecuted throughout their history and have suffered abuse in Iraq, Iran and Syria. These photographs were taken in 1997/1998 at the end of the war between KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) and PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan). The reportage shows the situation of the country 10 years after Saddam Hussein bombed the area. The images depict a population tormented by land mines and show the work of international aid organisations like Gino Strada's Emergency.

SCIRI boycotted a meeting of Iraqi religious and political leaders in Nasiriyah because its religious leaders refused any American presence in Iraq.
