In 1965 it was bought by the Chilean company Soquimich, which still operates the plant. The town was abandoned in 1996.

Pampa Union, was a town founded in 1911 close to the railway station Estacion Union, where people were working and living at the saltpeter mines. It was abandoned on 1954 and since then many graves were looted.
